Picasso

Step 7 : Cannes 1955
Carlton Cannes

1955: a new step in Picasso’s life – the mild bay of Cannes! Here, the Villa Californie (private property) became his new haven for living and creating and it was from here that he produced his series of works, the Ménines. Perched above the turquoise sea, his studio offered an inspirational outlook. Cannes and its elegant architecture, its palm trees and its fine-sand beaches all witnessed the 19th century Anglo-Saxon effervescence. And don’t forget the International Film Festival that takes place here each year.

To see and do:

- The Castre Museum: located at the top of old Cannes, in the vestiges of the medieval castle of the Lérins monks, now a listed historical monument, this museum has collections of art and objects from Oceania, the Himalayas and the Americas, as well as a vast collection of Mediterranean antiquities and pre-Colombian ceramics.
- Le Suquet: the old town of Cannes offers a panoramic view of the port, the bay and its islands. Its picturesque streets with their colourful houses lead to the square in front of the Notre-Dame d’Espérance cathedral, where classical music concerts take place in summer as part of the Nuits Musicales du Suquet (Suquet musical nights).
- The Lérins islands in the bay of Cannes: an idyllic setting where nature is preserved. There are two islands to visit: Ile Sainte-Marguerite with the royal Fort, which used to be home to the legendary Iron Mask, and Ile Saint-Honorat, with the Lérins Abbey and its Cistercian community. www.abbayedelerins.com
